LEAD PAINT
Many homes built before 1978 were painted with paint that contained large amounts of lead.  This paint is often referred to as "lead-based paint".  Through time, paint on just about any surface can chip or peel.  Smaller dust-sized particles can also deteriorate off of surfaces.  Lead-based paint chips and dust can pose serious health hazards, especially to smaller children or babies.  High enough levels of lead encountered by pregnant women can even affect the unborn child.

Lead poisoning (which can result from ingesstion of lead-based paint material), is of key concern with children because of their growth cycle.  Children's brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to its damaging affects.  Children through age 6 are particularly vulnerable to its affects.

For these reasons, owners of any property built before 1978 are required to advise renters or buyers of that property, if they are aware of any lead-based paint issues.  At a lease signing or property closing, the owner should have available a signed "Disclosure of Information on Lead-Based Paint and Lead-Based Paint Hazards" form, disclosing any information available with regards to potential lead-based paint in/on the home.  If you are renting, you should also be offered the pamphlet "Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home".  This pamphlet details lead-based paint and its potential affects on your body.  Feel free to click the link for a copy of that pamphlet.
